Chelsea Step Up Bid To Add Attacking Options As They Turn To Wilfried Zaha

Published

on

Wilfried Zaha is the latest player to be linked with Chelsea in the current summer transfer window. The club’s coach Thomas Tuchel had said he’d like to boost his forward line after seeing Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner head to Inter Milan and RB Leipzig, respectively.

Chelsea has been busy pursuing players in the transfer window after a poor outing last season. Many people hoped Thomas Tuchel to take the club to greater heights as far as winning the EPL. But Chelsea ended last season with the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup trophies.

One standout topic throughout last season was the amazingly poor run of Lukaku and Werner in front of goal. After Lukaku’s big-money move bringing him back to the club from Inter Milan, he seemed a shadow of himself all through the season for Chelsea. His form underlined Chelsea’s struggles to get a reliable leader for their attack.

Still, Lukaku ended up as Chelsea’s third-highest goal scorer last season despite his struggles. He had eight goals in all competitions for the club, the same as Kai Havertz. Chelsea’s top scorer was Mason Mount, who had 11 goals. He was the only Chelsea player to hit double figures in terms of goals last season. That would worry any coach that his attackers struggle for goals.

After completing its takeover, Chelsea is now on under the administration of Todd Boehly. The new reign sets them up nicely for the new season. Their new owner is keen to impress, which has seen the club splash cash on players in the summer transfer window. Chelsea has made six major signings, but only one of those players comes up on the frontline. That is Raheem Sterling, but he plays more as a left winger.

Although Chelsea has Centre-Forward Armando Broja back from Southampton, they still have a telling void in their attack. That deficiency was evident in their latest EPL outing against Leicester City. Even as Sterling stepped up to lead Chelsea to a win with two goals, they lacked any serious goal threat.

Chelsea has made moves for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of Barcelona and Anthony Gordon of Everton to solve their attacking issues. So far, Everton has rejected all of Chelsea’s offers, yet the club is still hoping to make a breakthrough.

With the transfer window deadline by the corner, Chelsea now sees Wilfried Zaha as an easier option to land. The idea is that he has only one year left on his contract with Crystal Palace, so the club may not hold out so much for him. Plus, Zaha has been linked to moves away from Palace in previous transfer windows.

It remains to see if Crystal Palace will listen to any offers from Chelsea for a player that they value highly. Also, they’d have to wait and find out if Zaha buys the idea of a move away from his club at the moment. Besides, he’s enjoying his stay there and is happy with the club’s treatment.
