Lyon make final Rayan Cherki decision as Mauricio Pochettino confirms Chelsea transfer plan

Published

Chelsea look set to miss out on the signing of Lyon star Rayan Cherki this summer. football.london reported earlier this month that the Blues had contacted Cherki’s representatives in order to understand how they would feel about a transfer.

football.london understands the Blues want to add a versatile forward that can operate as a winger and through the middle. Cherki sees his contract at the Groupama Stadium expire in 2025.

The 20-year-old has attracted interest from a host of Premier League clubs including Chelsea, Newcastle and West Ham – and fits the player profile Mauricio Pochettino is looking to add to his squad before the transfer window closes. Speaking after the win against Luton, Pochettino confirmed Chelsea’s transfer plans for the final six days of the summer window: “We want a goalkeeper and an offensive player more, but the right profile — one who can play all across the line,” the Chelsea boss said.

Chelsea confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic from MLS side New England Revolution on Saturday, adding another name to their ranks. football.london understands the 23-year-old joins the Blues on a seven-year deal with an option of an extra year on top, with the transfer itself costing £12.5million in guaranteed fees and £1.5million in add-ons.

L’Équipe have reported that despite interest from Chelsea, Newcastle United, Aston Villa and West Ham United, Cherki will remain at Olympique Lyonnais this season. Newcastle, Aston Villa and West Ham are all continuing in their attempts to sign the 20-year-old, as the transfer deadline nears, but the most likely outcome is that he remains with Lyon for a further year.

According to Nathan Gissing, the Blues have serious concerns over the youngster’s attitude with Pochettino looking to create a healthy culture and atmosphere at Stamford Bridge after last season. Gissing told The Byline: “I’m told Chelsea aren’t the biggest fans of his [Cherki] attitude

A deal to sign Michael Olise from Crystal Palace collapsed with the Frenchman signing a new contract at Selhurst Park after talks between the clubs ended. Mohammed Kudus was under consideration by Chelsea but the Ghana international is on the verge of signing for West Ham after completing a medical.

If Chelsea do not move for Cherki this summer, they may be able to secure a cheaper deal to sign the Frenchman next year when he enters the final 12 months of his contract. Lyon had set an asking price of £42million to let Cherki leave this summer – with the Blues feeling that a deal of £34million could be enough to secure his signature.
