Chelsea: Fabrizio Romano claims Blues edging closer to extending Thiago Silva’s contract

Chelsea are now edging closer to agreeing upon a new and improved contract extension for their veteran centre-back, Thiago Silva.

The latest?

The Blues have now enjoyed two-and-a-half seasons of action from Silva since making the move to London from Paris Saint-Germain.

And the defender has shown no signs of his age with the 37-year-old becoming one of the first names on the Chelsea teamsheet.

However, his deal at Stamford Bridge is set to expire at the end of this season but there is a belief they are nearing an agreement to extend his stay in London.

Indeed, speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano has suggested the two parties are now in advanced negotiations over the finer details of the potential deal:

“From what I understand, the feeling is more than positive. The feeling is that Thiago Silva is ready to decide and is ready to stay at Chelsea for one more season until June 2024.

“So one-year contract extension almost ready. Discussions are very advanced they’re waiting for the final green light but the decision, the feeling of all sources close to the player’s and club’s side is that they will continue together.”

Here to stay

Silva has certainly become a key figure in the Chelsea side having already racked up over 100 appearances for the Blues since arriving in 2020.

And this season alone, Silva has made 19 appearances in the Premier League and 18 of those have come from the starting XI

Chelsea’s spending since the arrival of Todd Boehly has been scrutinised by some outside of the club but his eagerness to improve has seen the Blues sign a number of central defenders.

The likes of Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile and Kalidou Koulibaly have all come through the doors at Stamford Bridge over recent months.

But amid some of their inexperience and injury issues, Silva has remained a key figure in the Chelsea side which is perhaps the reason why they’re so keen to keep him at the club.

In comparison to both Koulibaly and Badiashile, Silva has provided more passes, tackles, blocks and interceptions than the pair of them this season (via FBref).

So there is certainly a sense that Silva still has a lot to offer on the pitch, however, there will likely be the view he can provide a lot off the pitch too.

Koulibaly aside, the options are centre-back are still fairly young and there will surely be the hope at Chelsea that another year of them working alongside the Brazilian can only help their development.
