Chelsea’s £90m transfer business challenges Thomas Tuchel’s midfield comments

Published

on

It’s reasonable to say that Thomas Tuchel’s post-match remarks following the loss to Leeds raised a few eyebrows. They were possibly more contentious than the ones for which he was charged by the FA in connection with Anthony Taylor.

Due to two mistakes that resulted in goals in the first half, the German coach gave little credit to Leeds’ effort and even implied that Chelsea were the superior team at Elland Road. Tuchel dismissed the concept that a new striker would make a difference in the Blues’ ability to convert the limited opportunities they had and was baffled by the thought of bringing in another midfielder.

He asked, “Another midfielder?” We have Mateo Kovacic, N’Golo Kante, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Conor Gallagher, and Jorginho.” They are hurt, which is an issue. However, they’ll be back. They have not vanished.

The 48-year-perplexity old’s at Chelsea’s attempts to pursue Frenkie de Jong this summer is puzzling, but in some ways Chelsea are well-stocked in that position. Jorginho, N’Golo Kante, Conor Gallagher, Mateo Kovacic, the newly acquired Carney Chukwuemeka for £20 million, as well as those who appear to be leaving in Ethan Ampadu and Billy Gilmour

Chukwuemeka and Ampadu were left on the sidelines after Jorginho and Gallagher were replaced by Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech, which begins to reduce the field due to Tuchel’s unwillingness to deploy all of his options. Chelsea may have lost some of their most spectacular selections from the past few seasons due to injuries to Kovacic and Kante.

The fact that Kante will recover from his hamstring injury may give Tuchel some comfort. His words from May imply that the midfielder’s availability has been an issue ahead of talks over a new contract after his current agreement expires in the summer of 2019.

Tuchel stated last season, “I think he is our key, key, key player, but key, key, key players need to be on the pitch. Only 40% of the games feature him. Then, the fact that we place third may be a miracle. He is our Van Dijk, our De Bruyne, and our Mo Salah. Simply said, he is that player. He is Kylian Mbappe and Neymar to us.

If you only have him for 40% of the time, that is a significant problem since he is the one who makes the difference. Given that percentage, his ability to create outcomes may be a miracle. It puts everything into perspective because Liverpool battled a lot last season without Van Dijk, as I witnessed. The distinction is evident. Our primary player, N’Golo, must be present on the field.

The irritation in his statements is obvious, and despite some really strong play, Kovacic’s injury record has not been the best over the past 12 months. Due to his contract expiring in the summer of 2019, Jorginho, like Kante, will be entering contract negotiations. Afternoons like Sunday will have many wondering how well he performs in the center of the field without a certain kind of player next to him.

Chukwuemeka joined the Blues this summer, and Gallagher made his Chelsea debut this season, but these developments do not alter the fact that Tuchel’s midfield is undergoing a time of change. Under Maurizio Sarri, no new central midfielder has really been added since the summer of 2018.

While Mateo Kovacic signed on loan from Real Madrid, Jorginho joined in a £50 million deal from Napoli. The Croatian committed long-term for over £40 million in 2019. During that time, several midfielders were brought in. Kante arrived at Stamford Bridge in 2016, while Tiemoue Bakayoko and Danny Drinkwater joined with less success in 2017.

That suggests that the side may require some revitalization or a new form to ensure that qualities such as Gallagher’s are emphasized. Even though Kante, 31, and Jorginho, 30, are expected to sign new contracts, their contributions are expected to diminish over the next few months and years due to a mix of aging and injury. As things stand, their contracts expire in less than a year, and in some ways the changeover has already been too delayed.

How Palmer and Reece James Have Complemented Each Other in Chelsea’s Lineup This Season

Published

By

Reece James just returned to action for Chelsea this season after recovering from an injury that kept him on the sidelines for weeks but the synergy between the Chelsea Skipper and Cole Palmer has emerged as a pivotal factor in Chelsea’s recent impressive performance.

Their relationship on the pitch showcases a dynamic partnership that has been significantly impacting the team’s overall performance.

One key element of this collaboration is the strategic placement of Cole Palmer in the middle, operating behind the striker.

This positioning capitalizes on Palmer’s unique skill set, acknowledging that he may not possess the blistering pace or sheer physicality to excel in isolated one-on-one situations with defenders.

Instead, Palmer’s strength lies in his ability to receive the ball on the half-turn, exhibiting clever passes that ignite the team’s attacking prowess.

Palmer’s fluid style, characterized by his adept use of pockets and floating movements, creates a symbiotic relationship with Reece James.

James, a versatile right-back, benefits from Palmer’s strategic play by having the freedom to occupy the wing.

This tactical understanding not only maximizes Palmer’s strengths but also amplifies James’s impact on the game.

What becomes evident in this partnership is Palmer essentially playing as a number 10, operating in a role that aligns with his capabilities and enhances the team’s attacking dynamics.

By strategically placing Palmer in a central position, Chelsea leverages his playmaking abilities, allowing him to orchestrate the flow of the game and provide crucial link-up play between the midfield and the strikers.

The tactical harmony between Palmer and James is not just about individual brilliance but also about how their styles complement each other seamlessly.

Palmer’s intelligent movements and distribution empower James to venture forward with confidence, creating a fluid and dynamic attacking unit for Chelsea
